Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to Trump's Warning to Relocate FIFA World Cup Matches from City

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a face-off with US President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Wu appeared on a local podcast recently to respond to criticism from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had warned that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."

A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are directed at people and cities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a divisive plan."

Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting what Boston stands for." She finished by stressing her commitment for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

Trump's Comments and FIFA's Role

Earlier this week, Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to the president as gifts.

Earlier, President Trump was questioned on unrest in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being burned. He replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the head of the organization, who's phenomenal."

Trump continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details

Trump has made previous comments that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about moving matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 locations across the continent.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
