The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance
Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Common Enemy
The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
